Bristol Tennessee City Schools is proud to recognize Nicole Barrett as the District Teacher of the Year for grades 5 through 8. As a dedicated educator with a passion for helping students achieve their best, Ms. Barrett has made a profound impact on her students, locally and across the state.
A Bristol native, Ms. Barrett earned both her bachelorās and masterās degrees from East Tennessee State University. Her teaching journey began in Sullivan County before she transitioned to BTCS, where she has taught at Tennessee High School and Tennessee Online Public School (TOPS). Currently serving as the special education teacher for TOPS, Ms. Barrett has embraced the unique challenges and rewards of virtual education, providing unwavering support to students in an innovative learning environment.
"I became a teacher to inspire and assist students to do their best and follow their own personal dreams," Ms. Barrett said. Her passion is evident in the way she tailors instruction to meet each student's individual needs, ensuring that every learner has the opportunity to progress at their own pace. "My favorite part of teaching is helping students progress in their education, no matter the pace, level, or arena."
One of the unique aspects of her role at TOPS is working from home, an experience she embracesāeven without the traditional perks of snow days. Bringing warmth and personality into her virtual classroom, Ms. Barrettās two loyal companions, Roxy and Whiskers, sometimes make guest appearances, much to the delight of her students. "My two favorite co-workers are my dogs Roxy and Whiskers, who my students may see and hear online every now and then," she jokes.
Outside of teaching, Ms. Barrett finds balance and rejuvenation through outdoor adventures. Whether riding mountain bikes, camping, or skiing down snowy slopes, she enjoys staying active and embracing the beauty of nature.
Ms. Barrettās dedication to her students and her craft is evident in the way she fosters growth, confidence, and perseverance in every learner she encounters. Her recognition as the District Teacher of the Year for grades 5-8 is a testament to her commitment to education and her ability to positively shape the lives of her students. As she continues to guide and uplift young minds, she remains an inspiring example of passion, resilience, and the power of personalized learning.
